Dear Ones,
When Procrastination Is A Good Thing
I wrote this newsletter in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where my wife is fishing and my brother-in-law is taking a nap. I know, I know... shouldn't I also be engaging in some outdoor recreational activity? I will soon after composing this newsletter--meditate for a bit, listen to some Buddhist talks, and film a YouTube video. ;)
Seriously though, working at random times is one of the joys and puzzling habits of being a creator instead of working 9-5. I thought I was bad at time management by not adhering to a fixed block of working hours on weekdays. Only after taking the Small Bets course I learned that I'm not the only one who does this. In fact, David Vassallo, the founder of Small Bets, encourages us to work whenever we'd like.
An analogy he used in the class is that we should be like a hunter-gatherer instead of an agrarian, saving our energy for when it's time to pounce on an opportunity. In the Small Bets philosophy, procrastination is favored instead of shunned. It just means that one's cognitive and emotional states are not aligned with the task yet. (Here's an affiliate link to join the Small Bets course/community if you're interested. I wholeheartedly endorse it!)
I'm going to talk about how to use procrastination as a paradoxical tool for relaxation in the Meditation for Indie Superheroes workshop. Come by if you want to experience it for yourself…

Time for a Website Glow Up
Another thing I've been working on is my website, christinchong.com. I hadn't updated it since Write of Passage (October 2020.) It's due for a refresh since I now have new content, such as the Debug Your Meditation book. The format I'm going to "copy" is James Clear's website. As plain as it seems at first glance, there is a LOT of craft that went into it. Each word and call-to-action on the website directly answers "what's in it for me?" for the visitor.
But the design itself is a bit ...early 2000s. While I secretly like this look, it seems quite dated compared to today's 90s-esque janky esthetic. So I'm letting myself choose goofy colors to convey the type of content to expect from me (and the kind of person I really am!)
I will make a YouTube video about the website design choices, which might be helpful if you are also expanding as a creator.
What is your relationship with procrastination or your website?
Warm Wishes,
Christin
When Procrastination Is A Good Thing
Christin! Great choice. When I was starting my first website, I reached out to James Clear to ask him which font he used as I liked the clean look of his site. At that time he didn't have many subscribers, nor the machinery and books written that he has now. So he wrote me back.
I ended up with a very different colour palette and aesthetic as I had to create a site that reflects my reader, rather than myself.
Love the new site, Christin! Very clean and easy to navigate. Wow you've published A LOT!
