Dear Friends,
Kind Camp - A Reflective Writing Community
I finished mentoring for Write of Passage! If you are interested to know what I taught for the past 5 weeks, I wrote up a self-guided tutorial summarizing all the sessions, titled “Overcome Writer’s Block with Loving-Kindness.” You may find this article useful for developing your own strategies to support your goals, while being kind to yourself along the way.
Continuing the journey of holding space for writers, I’d like to announce…Kind Camp!
✍️ Build a rejuvenating writing system based on kindness and self-reflection
❤️🔥 Discover your truths using Buddhist meditation + neuroscience frameworks
🏕️ Gain clarity on your personal mission with a compassionate community
Who Is Kind Camp For?
You might want an easier time writing consistently, uplifted by kindness and encouragement.
You think you found your personal monopoly/mission, but you're not quite sure. Maybe it includes part of who you are, but you want to feel whole.
You wonder about how to deepen your self-understanding, perhaps as part of your writing and/or spiritual practice.
What Happens in Kind Camp Sessions?
I will provide guided reflective writing and meditation practice to support your self-discovery, based on time-tested Buddhist + neuroscience themes.
We will share our reflections in the form of a mantra (~5 words) with each other to close the session.
You will walk away from each session with a piece of writing that reflects your true heart.
(Optional, via Discord) The community will workshop strategies and tactics for publicly sharing our writing without vulnerability hangover.
Community Schedule
We meet as a community every other Thursday at 4-5PM PT starting December 1st, 2022 (check your timezone)
Community sessions and memberships are ongoing, with limited seats per quarter.
Communicating the Vector…Draft Version
What I haven’t yet included in the Kind Camp landing page is the bigger mission behind the offering. To be completely honest, it’s because the mission resides in this liminal space in my mind right now, where I can…see Point A and Point Z, but the Points in between are still nascent and fuzzy. Yet I know from internet sage Visa that “communicating the vector” (where one’s heading) is really important for projects requiring high amounts of momentum and group support.
So here are a few bullets…
Point Z is some form of universal consciousness and/or ultimate happiness for everybody.
Points Y to B are:
Reflective writing:
What it is: Reflective writing is the space between journaling and writing for an audience. How can we discover our vulnerable raw thoughts for ourselves, and then turn it into relatable and useful content for others? I have found a somewhat convoluted path to do this and can help others with theirs, but it will make sense to do so in community so we can put our heads together.
How it helps: Along with meditation, I believe that reflective writing guided by Buddhist teachings + neuroscience frameworks may help others with deep discoveries of themselves. So that they can understand and be kinder to themselves, and in turn, be kinder to others. The writing itself may also benefit others by helping others feel seen and heard, or through the practical benefit of its content.
Why it’s needed: Society is becoming increasing fractured, and writers can use their strengths in writing to heal the wounds. (This is a point that I’m still putting my finger on…because there’s actually a “split” in the type of people helped here. I can help introspective/reflective people be even more equipped, but I am unsure if this strategy can reach people who are not introspectively-inclined.)
Vulnerable writing pathway: Right now, it’s quite challenging for most to share their most vulnerable selves through writing. Trolls abound and it’s easy to be misunderstood. But good writing is truthful writing, which sometimes means digging deep into one’s faults, insecurities, traumas. I had inadvertently stumbled upon defining the vulnerable → useful writing pathway for myself, and can help others with theirs.
Mass Adoption: How can I get an average person to be aware of reflective writing?
It would be ideal to use traditional publishing as an avenue of influence.
It would be good if I can work with a community of kind writers who can help articulate the simplest, most effective path for reflective writing practices.
…other points yet to be articulated…
Point A is Kind Camp!
Point Z (universal consciousness/ultimate happiness for everybody) is quite a grand goal, and it feels egotistical to say that’s what I want to achieve. Yet I don’t think “Christin” is the one who is responsible per se. It’s more like universal consciousness/ultimate happiness wants to happen and I happen to be the vector for a part of it. And I increasingly see that getting agitated in achieving this goal is counter-productive, though old habits do die hard. 😉
Warm Wishes,
Christin
There are several scholars in Writing Studies/ Rhetoric/ Composition who share similar interests within the context of teaching writing to college and graduate students. Given your neuroscience background, chaplaincy training, familiarity with contemplative practices, and experiences as a writer and writing teacher, your voice and perspective are of particular interest.
Here's a link to a special edition of Composition Studies on Writing and Well-Being that gives some sense of the work those folks are doing: https://compositionstudiesjournal.files.wordpress.com/2022/11/cs50n1-all.pdf
Oooh, no wonder! We have the same point Z :). See you in Rome!
